The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at Drexel University College of Medicine is a nine-week program designed for undergraduate students interested in exploring biomedical research careers. SURF offers students the opportunity to enhance their analytical and technical scientific research skills by working closely with Drexel University College of Medicine faculty across various disciplines, including biochemistry, molecular and cell biology, neuroscience, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology, and physiology. Participants engage in daily research experiments, attend laboratory meetings, and receive mentorship throughout the program.

Program dates: June 8 to August 7, 2026 (9 weeks).

Eligibility Requirements

  • Open to undergraduate students, with priority given to sophomores and juniors as of spring 2026; freshmen may apply, but seniors expected to graduate in 2026 are not eligible.
  • Only students residing within reasonable commuting distance to Philadelphia will be considered; applicants should indicate their summer address on the application.
  • Selection is based on the student's academic record, research experience, letters of recommendation, and statements of research interests and career goals.

  • Applicants must have an interest in pursuing biomedical research (i.e., PhD or MD/PhD) in graduate school and must be in good standing at their undergraduate institutions. This is a key eligibility requirement.
