European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) PhD Programme

MultinationalPhDEntry ID: PR-08988

The EMBL International PhD Programme (EIPP), established in 1983, offers PhD students an excellent platform for a successful career in science through early independence and interdisciplinary research. Hosted across multiple EMBL sites in Europe, it promotes excellence in molecular life sciences, providing state-of-the-art training that balances theory and practice, individual mentoring, creative freedom, teamwork, and early independence. Students work on cutting-edge research topics in an international, collaborative environment with access to outstanding facilities, competitive stipends, health care, and pension benefits. The programme emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, welcoming candidates from diverse backgrounds including biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Students conduct research under supervision of EMBL Group/Team Leaders and a Thesis Advisory Committee, participate in seminars, retreats, and networking events, and organize symposia.

The average PhD duration is around 4 years, with fellowships initially for 3.5 years (extendable by 6 months). All students attend a 9-week PhD Core Course in Molecular Biology in the first year at EMBL Heidelberg, a 1-week Bioinformatics module in the second year, and a Career Development module in the third year. Additional training includes complementary skills courses, career workshops, webinars, and individual guidance from the EMBL Fellows’ Career Service. Students register with a university for their PhD degree or opt for a Joint PhD with EMBL and a partner university. Two recruitment rounds occur annually across EMBL sites in Barcelona, Grenoble, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Hinxton (UK), and Rome.

EMBL fosters a multicultural atmosphere with opportunities for public outreach, teaching, and contributions to committees. Testimonials highlight strong networking, collaborations, work-life balance, and preparation for future careers in academia, industry, or beyond. No fees are charged for applications, interviews, or training.
