Molecular & Environmental Toxicology Summer Research Opportunities Program (MET- SROP)
The Molecular & Environmental Toxicology SROP at the University of Wisconsin-Madison provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research focused on understanding the effects of environmental agents on biological systems. The program is designed to immerse students in the interdisciplinary field of toxicology, where they can explore how chemicals and environmental factors influence human health and the environment.
Participants in this SROP program work under the mentorship of faculty members in the Molecular and Environmental Toxicology Center at UW-Madison. Research projects may involve studying the molecular mechanisms of toxicity, assessing the impact of environmental contaminants, developing methods for detecting hazardous substances, or exploring the interactions between genes and environmental factors.
In addition to research activities, the program includes professional development workshops, seminars, and networking opportunities. These activities are designed to help students develop research skills, learn about graduate school, and explore careers in toxicology, environmental science, and public health.
Eligibility Requirements
- Undergraduate Status: Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate students, typically sophomores, juniors, or rising seniors.
- Interest in Toxicology and Environmental Science: Applicants should have a strong interest in molecular biology, environmental science, toxicology, or related fields.
- Underrepresented Backgrounds: The program is particularly aimed at students from underrepresented backgrounds in science and those who may not have access to extensive research opportunities at their home institutions.
- Academic Achievement: A competitive GPA is usually required, particularly in relevant coursework such as biology, chemistry, and environmental science.
- Application Materials: Applicants are generally required to submit a resume or CV, a personal statement outlining their research interests and career goals, unofficial transcripts, and letters of recommendation from faculty members or advisors. An interview may also be part of the selection process.
