National Renewable Energy Laboratory Science Internship
The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program at the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR) is the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science's premier undergraduate education and research program. It provides hands-on research experience in world-class laboratory facilities under the guidance of scientific and technical staff serving as mentors on DOE projects. Interns contribute to NLR's research in approximately 50 scientific areas supporting an affordable, abundant, and reliable energy future.
Interns engage in a specific research project, attend professional development activities including laboratory tours, scientific speakers, and workshops on technical writing, oral presentations, and posters. The program offers competitive pay at $22.50 per hour, travel reimbursement up to $500 for those living more than 50 miles away, and an RTD Eco Pass for regional transit. Terms are 10 weeks in summer or 16 weeks in fall/spring semesters, with possible late starts for academic reasons.
Applications are submitted through the DOE Office of Science SULI portal, where participants select NLR as their laboratory choice. The program complements academic studies and prepares students for STEM careers through real-world problem-solving and networking with experts. Housing is arranged by participants; background checks and drug screening are required.
