NIST Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

NIST SURF places undergraduates in an 11-week paid summer research fellowship at one of NIST's world-class measurement-science laboratories in Gaithersburg, MD or Boulder, CO. Students work alongside NIST scientists and engineers across physics, chemistry, materials, biosciences, engineering, computer science and more, and present their work at a closing colloquium. The 2026 stipend is expected to be about $7,810 for the summer ($710/week), with limited housing (~$4,500) and travel (up to $500) assistance for students who relocate.
