The Jane Teranes-Scripps Undergraduate Research Fellowship (JT-SURF) is a 10-week NSF-funded summer research program at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. Undergraduate participants conduct faculty-mentored research in diverse fields including oceanography, marine biology, earth sciences, geophysics, and atmospheric sciences. The program features daily research (8 hours/day, Mon-Fri), professional development workshops, weekly seminars and career panels, a culminating research symposium presentation, local field trips, and social events to foster success in STEM careers and graduate studies.
Eligibility Requirements
- Current undergraduate students (must not graduate before summer 2026)
- U.S. citizens or permanent residents
- 18 years or older by program start
- Available full-time (~40 hrs/week) for entire duration: June 15–August 21, 2026
- Proof of health insurance coverage
- No prior research experience or earth/ocean science coursework required
- Prior ocean sciences REU participants generally ineligible (exceptions via inquiry)
- Strongly encourages applications from historically underrepresented groups in earth/ocean sciences (e.g., Hispanic/Latine, Black/African American, Native American/Alaska Native, Pacific Islander, Asian, LGBTQIA+, first-generation, economically disadvantaged, veterans, parents, students with disabilities)
