Summer Health Professions Education Program

United States · MassachusettsUndergraduateEntry ID: PR-44275

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free, six-week summer academic enrichment program aimed at improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP is open to undergraduate students from underrepresented backgrounds, economically disadvantaged communities, or those with limited access to healthcare education opportunities.

Hosted at 12 academic institutions across the United States, SHPEP provides participants with a unique opportunity to explore various health professions, including medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, and public health. The program's goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students who are committed to pursuing a career in the health professions.

Participants engage in a rigorous curriculum that includes courses in basic sciences, such as biology and chemistry, as well as health policy, ethics, and the social determinants of health. The program also offers hands-on clinical experiences, including simulations, lab work, and shadowing opportunities with healthcare professionals.

In addition to academic instruction, SHPEP provides workshops on study skills, time management, and financial planning. Participants also receive guidance on the health professions school application process, including preparation for the MCAT, DAT, or other relevant exams.
