The Commonwealth Shared Scholarship Scheme (CSSS) is a collaborative initiative between the UK's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and UK universities. It aims to support students from developing Commonwealth countries who, due to financial constraints, would otherwise be unable to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom.

Value and Duration:

  • Approved airfare from the applicant's home country to the UK and return at the end of the award.
  • Approved tuition fees.
  • Stipend (living allowance) at the rate of £1,347 per month, or £1,652 per month for those studying at universities in the London metropolitan area.
  • Warm clothing allowance, where applicable.
  • Thesis grant towards the cost of preparing a thesis or dissertation, where applicable.
  • Study travel grant towards the cost of study-related travel within the UK or overseas.
  • Excess baggage allowance for books up to an annual approved limit when returning home.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be citizens of or have been granted refugee status by an eligible Commonwealth country, or be a British Protected Person.
  • Must be a permanent resident in an eligible Commonwealth country.
  • A first degree of at least upper second-class (2:1) honors standard, or a lower second-class degree (2:2) and a relevant postgraduate qualification (usually a Master's degree).
  • Must demonstrate that they are unable to afford to study in the UK without this scholarship.
