The Hasso-Plattner Institute (HPI) Research School at UCT, affiliated with the School of Information Technology, offers annual PhD and Postdoctoral fellowships to qualified students from the African continent in the fields of Computer Science (CS) and Information Systems (IS). The program focuses on Information and Communications Technology for Development (ICT4D), aiming to address challenges pertinent to the African context. Scholars engage in original research under the guidance of experienced supervisors in areas such as Natural Language Processing, Human-Computer Interaction, Knowledge Engineering, and more.

Scholarship Benefit:

  • Monthly stipend of EUR 1,050 (paid in ZAR, up to ZAR 17,000) towards fees and expenses.
  • One-time equipment allowance of EUR 1,000.
  • Annual support of up to EUR 2,000 for conference attendance.
  • Funding is typically available for up to 3 years, subject to satisfactory progress.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Hold a Master's Degree (or PhD for Postdoctoral candidates) in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field, supported by a strong dissertation.
  • Proficiency in English, demonstrated by recent TOEFL or IELTS scores, unless the medium of prior education was English.
  • Preparedness to study full-time in Cape Town, South Africa, with the requirement to secure a study visa.
