Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders
The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), administered by IREX on behalf of the U.S. Department of State. Established in 2014, it brings up to 700 accomplished young leaders aged 25-35 from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States for academic and leadership training.
Fellows participate in a six-week Leadership Institute hosted at U.S. colleges and universities in one of three tracks: Business, Civic Engagement, or Public Management, focusing on coursework, leadership training, site visits, community service, and cultural activities. This is followed by a Summit in Washington, D.C. Up to 100 Fellows may be selected for an additional optional four-week Professional Development Experience (PDE) with a U.S. organization. The U.S. Government fully funds all participant costs, including round-trip airfare from the Fellow's home city, J-1 visa support, domestic U.S. travel, housing, meals, and a limited accident/sickness insurance plan during the program (approximately 7-11 weeks total).
The program fosters networks among emerging leaders and provides ongoing alumni opportunities. Note: The Fellowship will not take place in 2026, though alumni opportunities continue.
