The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is a comprehensive scholarship initiative that supports talented young Africans in pursuing their academic and professional dreams. At the University of Pretoria, the program provides full scholarships to undergraduate and postgraduate (Honours and Masters) students from Africa, covering tuition fees, living expenses, and additional allowances for research and travel. The University and the Mastercard Foundation entered a phase-2 agreement in December 2023, and a new phase-2 cohort began studies in January 2026. The program targets academically talented young Africans facing economic and social barriers, including those living with disabilities and internally displaced persons/refugees.
Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a citizen of an African country.
- Must demonstrate academic talent and leadership potential, including involvement in community service, school activities, or religious organizations.
- Must be economically disadvantaged and in need of financial assistance; priority groups include refugees, internally displaced persons, and individuals with disabilities.
- Must have applied to and been accepted into an eligible Undergraduate, Honours, or Masters program at the University of Pretoria.
- Must be committed to returning to their home country after graduation to contribute to its development.
