The Tentanda Via Award recognizes up to 60 York University students annually (45 domestic, 15 international) who have demonstrated perseverance and fortitude in overcoming significant personal barriers in pursuit of a university education, or leadership in progressive and sustainable development initiatives. Awards are not academic- or merit-based. Domestic recipients receive $10,000/year (renewable annually for three additional years, up to $40,000 total); international undergraduate recipients receive $30,000/year (renewable, up to $120,000 total). A committee reviews student statements and supporting documentation to shortlist and select recipients, aiming to distribute awards across faculties and geographic regions.
Eligibility Requirements
- Open to all domestic and international undergraduate applicants at York University.
- Must submit a personal statement (no more than 500 words) detailing how they meet the award criteria — perseverance overcoming personal barriers, or leadership in sustainable-development initiatives.
- Financial need may be considered.
- Must specifically select the Tentanda Via Award on the application form to be considered.
