Berkeley Lab Summer Undergraduate Research Program
The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science, provides undergraduate students, post-baccalaureates, and graduate students with opportunities to pursue STEM careers through paid research internships at DOE national laboratories. Internships last 10 weeks in the summer (May-August) or 16 weeks in fall/spring terms, where participants work on cutting-edge research projects mentored by lab scientists using state-of-the-art facilities. The program aims to develop skills, expand professional networks, and expose students to DOE missions in science and technology.
At Berkeley Lab, SULI interns contribute to research in areas like energy, materials science, computing, and environmental sciences, aligning with the lab's multidisciplinary efforts. Applications are submitted through the DOE WDTS online system (WARS), with Berkeley Lab selected as a preferred site. Mentors review applications based on academic background, essays linking interests to lab projects, and recommendations. No prior lab experience is required, but a minimum 3.0 GPA is needed. The program fosters initiative and passion for science.
