CIMES Summer Research Internship

United States · New JerseyUndergraduateEntry ID: PR-87878

The CIMES Summer Research Internship offers undergraduate students the chance to work alongside leading scientists in climate and Earth system modeling. Research projects focus on understanding the processes that govern Earth's climate and weather systems, improving predictions of climate change impacts, and developing advanced computational models to simulate various aspects of the Earth system.

Students are paired with Princeton faculty mentors and work on interdisciplinary projects that may include topics such as climate variability, ocean-atmosphere interactions, atmospheric dynamics, extreme weather events, and carbon cycling. Research often involves the use of advanced climate models, data analysis techniques, and simulations.

In addition to research, the program provides seminars, professional development workshops, and networking opportunities. These activities help students enhance their research skills, learn about scientific communication, and explore career paths in climate science, environmental research, and related fields. Students will present their research findings at a final symposium attended by faculty and peers.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Undergraduate Status: Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate students, typically rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
  • Interest in Climate and Earth System Research: Applicants should have a strong interest in climate science, atmospheric science, or environmental research.
  • Academic Achievement: A competitive GPA is required, particularly in relevant coursework such as environmental science, geoscience, physics, mathematics, or computational science.
  • Application Materials: Applicants are typically required to submit a resume or CV, a personal statement outlining their research interests and career goals, unofficial transcripts, and letters of recommendation from faculty members.
