Gilliam Fellows Program
The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Gilliam Fellows Program supports outstanding PhD students in the life sciences and their faculty thesis advisors. The program is designed to advance cutting-edge scientific research while fostering inclusive and supportive research training environments.
Unlike many fellowships that fund only the student, the Gilliam Fellows Program supports both the doctoral researcher and their faculty advisor as a mentor-mentee pair. Fellows receive funding for dissertation research, professional development opportunities, leadership training, and community engagement activities that contribute to a healthier and more inclusive scientific ecosystem.
The program aims to prepare future scientific leaders and strengthen mentoring practices within graduate education.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must generally:
Be enrolled in a biomedical, biological, or life sciences PhD program at an accredited U.S. institution.
Be in their second or third year of PhD study at the time of application.
Have at least two full years of doctoral study remaining when the fellowship begins.
Apply jointly with their thesis advisor.
Conduct research in eligible biomedical or life science disciplines.
Demonstrate commitment to fostering positive and inclusive scientific training environments.
Remain in good academic standing throughout the fellowship period.
