NSF-REU Internship in Astronomy
The MMA NSF-REU Internship in Astronomy provides undergraduate students with an immersive experience in astronomical research. Interns work on research projects involving observational astronomy, astrophysics, and data analysis. The program is based at the Maria Mitchell Observatory (MMO) on Nantucket Island, where interns have access to the observatory's telescopes and equipment for data collection and analysis.
Students are paired with a faculty mentor and engage in a variety of research activities, which may include studying star formation, analyzing stellar and planetary data, observing celestial objects, and contributing to ongoing astronomical research. Interns gain valuable experience in using telescopes and advanced imaging technologies to collect and interpret astronomical data.
In addition to research, interns participate in professional development workshops, seminars, and networking opportunities. These activities focus on enhancing scientific communication skills, understanding research ethics, and preparing for graduate school or careers in astronomy. Interns present their research findings in a formal setting at the end of the program.
