Maria Mitchell Aquarium Internship
The Maria Mitchell Aquarium Internship offers students the chance to immerse themselves in marine science and conservation while working at the Maria Mitchell Aquarium on Nantucket Island. Interns are involved in daily aquarium operations, which include the care and maintenance of local marine species, exhibit creation, and general husbandry. Students also help with public education programs, providing tours, answering visitor questions, and assisting with marine science outreach efforts.
Interns conduct fieldwork, such as collecting specimens for the aquarium exhibits from local waters, and they assist with ongoing research projects related to Nantucket's coastal ecosystems. Additionally, interns help monitor local water quality, participate in educational workshops, and may have the opportunity to assist with marine biology research and data collection.
This internship provides students with valuable hands-on experience in the practical aspects of marine biology and aquarium science. Interns also develop public speaking and communication skills through their work with visitors and educational programs.
Eligibility Requirements
- Educational background in marine science, biology, environmental science, or related field with at least two (2) years of college experience.
- Some degree of marine science experience which may include, coursework, study abroad, internship, volunteering, etc.
- Outgoing personality and enthusiasm for teaching science.
- Strong career interests in marine biology and/or outdoor education.
- Experience working and interacting with the public, both adults and children.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- The MMA will follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance and continue to require all employees to receive a primary COVID-19 vaccination series and one booster in 2024.
