Penn Summer Training in Aging Research
The Summer Training in Aging Research (STAR) Internship at the University of Pennsylvania's Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) is a nine-week program designed to provide undergraduate, graduate, and medical students with hands-on research experience, classroom-based learning, and faculty mentoring in the field of aging and neurodegenerative diseases.
articipants engage in mentored research projects aligned with their interests and career goals, focusing on areas such as clinical research, basic science, communications, social work, clinical care, and neuropathology. The program includes opportunities to shadow professionals, attend mandatory meetings, and participate in weekly consensus meetings where patient data is discussed. At the program's conclusion, interns present their research experiences. A stipend of $4,500 is provided.
Eligibility Requirements
- Current undergraduate, graduate, or medical school students
- Identities and experiences considered include:
- Students from underrepresented groups (URG), such as:
- Racial/ethnic identities including but not limited to Black or African American, Latino/Hispanic
- Persons with disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds
- Students from underrepresented groups (URG), such as:
- A cover letter with personal and academic details
- A two-page essay addressing:
- Background, including any identities or experiences to be given special consideration
- Interest in research or care of older adults with neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's
- Commitment to health equity with a focus on the Black/African American community
- How this internship will advance future studies and career
