Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Chemical Upcycling of Waste Plastics

United States · WisconsinUndergraduateEntry ID: PR-72008

The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) in Chemical Upcycling of Waste Plastics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison provides undergraduate students with the opportunity to engage in hands-on research that focuses on developing innovative chemical processes to upcycle waste plastics. The program is designed to immerse students in research that addresses critical environmental challenges related to plastic waste by transforming it into valuable materials or chemicals through chemical upcycling techniques.

Participants in this REU program work under the mentorship of faculty members in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering or related departments. Research projects may involve studying advanced catalytic processes, designing new polymerization methods, developing sustainable materials, or exploring the life cycle of plastics. The aim is to create processes that are both economically viable and environmentally sustainable.

In addition to research activities, the program includes professional development workshops, seminars on topics such as research ethics and scientific communication, and networking opportunities with faculty, graduate students, and industry professionals. The program typically culminates in a research symposium where students present their findings to their peers, faculty, and other members of the academic community.

The REU program provides a stipend, housing, and sometimes travel allowances, allowing students to fully immerse themselves in the research experience without financial concerns.
