Student Training in Oceanography, Remote Sensing, and Meteorology (STORM) REU

United States · WisconsinUndergraduateEntry ID: PR-11626

The STORM REU at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is designed to immerse undergraduate students in the study of oceanography, meteorology, and remote sensing. The program offers participants the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge research projects that explore atmospheric and oceanic processes, the use of remote sensing technology to study the Earth’s systems, and the impact of weather and climate on the environment.

Participants in the STORM REU work closely with faculty mentors and graduate students on research projects that may involve data collection and analysis, field studies, and the application of remote sensing techniques to study weather patterns, ocean currents, and environmental changes. The program emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, combining knowledge from meteorology, oceanography, and remote sensing to address complex scientific questions.

In addition to research activities, the program includes professional development workshops, seminars, and networking opportunities. These activities are designed to help students develop research skills, learn about graduate school opportunities, and explore careers in atmospheric sciences, oceanography, and related fields.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Undergraduate Status: Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate students, typically sophomores, juniors, or rising seniors.
  • Undergraduate students at least 18 years of age
  • Interest in Atmospheric and Oceanographic Sciences: Applicants should have a strong interest in meteorology, oceanography, remote sensing, or related fields.
  • Academic Achievement: A competitive GPA is usually required, particularly in relevant coursework such as physics, mathematics, environmental science, and geography.
  • Application Materials: Applicants are generally required to submit a resume or CV, a personal statement outlining their research interests and career goals, unofficial transcripts, and letters of recommendation from faculty members or advisors. An interview may also be part of the selection process.
