Wellcome Trust PhD Programmes
Wellcome Trust's PhD Programmes for Health Professionals offer outstanding research training to registered health professionals in supportive and inclusive environments across UK centres of excellence. These 3-year (full-time equivalent) PhD fellowships support individuals demonstrating potential for academic health professional careers, covering salary per UK clinical scale, UK-rate PhD/college fees, research expenses, travel/childcare/caring costs, and training. Part-time options available; programmes recruit annually via individual host consortia.
Participating programmes include 4Ward North (Newcastle, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield), ECAT-I (Edinburgh), GW4-CAT (Bath, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter), and others focusing on mental health (King's), global health, primary care, multimorbidity, etc. Fellows maintain clinical skills and receive mentorship in world-leading research settings. Eligibility Requirements
- Registered UK health professionals (doctors all specialties/GPs, nurses, midwives, allied health e.g. physiotherapists/OTs/SLTs, dentists/hygienists/therapists, vets, pharmacists, optometrists, clinical psychologists, healthcare scientists in life/physiological/physical sciences/bioinformatics/engineering, health visitors, non-medical public health specialists, social workers, etc.)
- Demonstrated potential for academic career
- UK/Republic of Ireland registered where applicable
- Not started PhD; programme-specific requirements apply
- Open to diverse backgrounds; some for specific groups e.g. primary care clinicians
