Wellcome's PhD Programmes for Health Professionals offer health professionals outstanding research training in supportive and inclusive research environments across UK centres of excellence. These 3-year (full-time equivalent) PhD fellowships support individuals who have demonstrated potential to pursue a career as an academic health professional, covering a salary in line with the appropriate UK clinical salary scale, home (UK)-rate PhD registration fees, college fees where required, research expenses, essential travel/childcare/caring costs, and training costs. Fellowships can be undertaken part-time; each participating programme recruits once per year through its own application process and applicants apply directly to the individual programme, not to Wellcome Trust.
Eligibility Requirements
- Registered UK health professionals with demonstrated potential for an academic health professional career, including: doctors (all specialties incl. GPs), nurses, midwives, allied health professionals (art therapists, chiropodists/podiatrists, dieticians, drama therapists, music therapists, occupational therapists, operating department practitioners, orthoptists, osteopaths, paramedics, physiotherapists, prosthetists and orthotists, radiographers, speech and language therapists), dentists, dental hygienists, dental nurses, dental therapists, chiropractors, clinical/practitioner psychologists, healthcare scientists (life sciences, physiological sciences, physical sciences and biomedical engineering, bioinformatics), health visitors, non-medical public health specialists, optometrists and dispensing opticians, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, social workers, vets
- Not started PhD; individual programmes apply their own additional eligibility requirements (see each programme's own page)
- Not eligible for PhD funding outside these named programmes, or for activities involving transfer of grant funds into mainland China
- Apply directly to the relevant university programme, not to Wellcome Trust
