The Canon Collins RMTFP (Richard and Maureen Tomlinson Fellowship Programme) Scholarships are partial funding scholarships for postgraduate students at South African universities. The programme is designed to support exceptional students who demonstrate academic merit, commitment to social justice, and a sustained record of community engagement. Funding covers up to two years for Master's study and up to three years for PhD study, valued at R20,000 to R100,000 depending on student circumstances, with the ability to reapply for continued funding subject to satisfactory progress.

Eligibility Requirements

  • You must be a national of, or have recognised refugee status in, one of the following countries: Angola, Botswana, Eswatini (Swaziland), Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe
  • You must be ordinarily resident in one of the above countries
  • You must be applying for, or currently enrolled in, a Master's or PhD programme at a South African university
  • You must hold, or expect to obtain in the year of application, a good Honours degree (minimum Second Class Upper Division or equivalent) for Master's study, or a good Master's degree for PhD study
  • You must demonstrate at least two years of sustained commitment to social justice through active community, advocacy, teaching, civil society or research engagement
  • Your proposed study or research must contribute to understanding or addressing a significant social justice challenge affecting Southern Africa
  • PhD applicants must have identified a supervisor who has agreed in principle to supervise the research and submit a draft research proposal
  • Your field of study must fall within Justice, Education policy and practice, or Humanities (see description)
