The Cowrie Foundation Scholarships at The University of Manchester aim to support Black African and Caribbean heritage students from socio-economically underrepresented backgrounds by providing financial assistance and mentoring throughout their undergraduate degree. The partnership began in 2021 and will support 23 students over seven years. For 2026 entry, two scholarships are available: tuition fees paid throughout the degree, plus an annual maintenance bursary of £6,000 paid in two instalments (October and February), along with peer and professional mentoring.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Identify as Black or Black British (Caribbean or African), or Mixed (White and Black Caribbean/African), or Other Black background.
  • Applied to study an undergraduate degree at the University of Manchester starting September 2026.
  • Assessed for fee status as a 'home' student.
  • Submitted an application to a regional student funding authority with a full household income assessment.
  • Household income of £35,000 per annum or less.
