The Cambridge Mathematics Open Internships program is a funded summer research opportunity intended for students in mathematics who are in their late undergraduate years (second year and above) or Master’s studies at a UK university. This program offers students the chance to gain first-hand experience as researchers at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (CMS) at the University of Cambridge. Participants will conduct their own research projects under the guidance of leading mathematicians, develop research skills, and learn how to communicate their work effectively.

Programme Summary

  • 2-3 funded placements are available for summer 2025
  • Each internship will run for 8 weeks: Monday 7 July to Friday 29 August 2025
  • Interns will be paid the National Living Wage plus holiday pay
  • All placements are in person and will be based at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences, University of Cambridge
  • Interns will be mentored by current PhD students and integrated into the relevant research group / department for the duration of the placement
  • Two-step application process:
    1. Expression of Interest (deadline: 21 February 2025)
    2. Final Application (deadline: 24 March 2024

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must be students:

  • who are currently registered at a higher education institution in the UK other than Cambridge
  • who will have completed at least their second year of undergraduate studies and at most their masters or equivalent in a mathematical subject when the internship begins in summer 2024
  • who are on track for a First or a 2:1 in your undergraduate degree (as evidenced by your referee)
  • who have an interest in undertaking a research postgraduate degree (MPhil or PhD)
  • who have not had significant prior research experience
