The Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program offers more than 380 awards in more than 120 countries for U.S. citizens to teach, conduct research, and carry out professional projects abroad. College and university faculty, research and development professionals, artists, and practitioners across fields may apply. Awards typically last from a few months to a full academic year; some include a Flex option for multiple visits.
Award types include Fulbright Scholar Awards (the majority of offerings, at all career levels), Distinguished Scholar Awards (generally more than seven years of experience in the discipline), Postdoctoral Awards for recent doctoral graduates, and International Education Administrator seminars. Activities are teaching, research, teaching/research, or a professional project. Applicants apply to one award per competition through the IIE catalog.
The program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and administered by the Institute of International Education (Council for International Exchange of Scholars). Non-U.S. citizens should use the Fulbright Visiting Scholar pathway, not this competition. Degree-seeking students should apply to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program instead.
Eligibility Requirements
- U.S. citizenship by the application deadline (permanent residency is not sufficient)
- Meet the education, experience, and career-profile requirements of the specific award (terminal degree or comparable professional qualifications where stated)
- Graduate or doctoral students seeking funding to complete a degree are ineligible; recent college graduates with limited professional experience should apply to the Fulbright U.S. Student Program
- Applicants who have resided abroad for five or more years in the six-year period before the deadline are ineligible (nine months or more in a calendar year counts as a full year)
- Recipients of a prior Fulbright Scholar award may apply two years after that award ends; preference is given to candidates who have not previously received a Scholar grant
- Language proficiency may be required depending on country, activity, and project — see the individual award
- One application per competition; International Education Administrator awards follow award-specific deadlines
