National University of Singapore Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme
The NUS Undergraduate Research Opportunities Programme (UROP) enables undergraduates at the National University of Singapore to participate in hands-on research projects across various disciplines under faculty supervision. Participants typically commit approximately 130 hours (equivalent to 10 hours per week over 13 weeks), earning 4 modular credits applicable toward their major requirements. The program immerses students in real-world research, promoting critical thinking, creativity, innovation, and problem-solving skills through active involvement in ongoing projects. It is available throughout the academic year in regular semesters or special terms, with options for multi-semester commitments in some faculties.
Enhanced variants like UROP+REx, particularly for the School of Computing (from AY2024-25), offer a holistic experience including research-themed workshops, opportunities to present at conferences or symposiums (e.g., REx Conference 2026), interdisciplinary collaborations, and overseas research trips. Testimonials from participants highlight transformative experiences in research ecosystems spanning sciences, humanities, and more, supported by mentors and a conducive environment for ownership of research endeavors. Overseas summer UROPS opportunities with partner institutions are also available during special terms.
The application process involves students proactively identifying and approaching potential faculty supervisors during designated discussion windows, finalizing project details upon acceptance, and completing online registration during fixed periods per semester/special term—applications are managed internally for enrolled NUS students through faculty pages. Available project lists are updated regularly on faculty pages.
