Pasteur Institute International PhD Program

FrancePhDEntry ID: PR-84310

The Pasteur-Paris University (PPU) International Doctoral Program, launched in 2009 by the Institut Pasteur in collaboration with major Parisian universities, offers exceptional PhD training in life sciences and biomedicine. Students conduct research in one of 144 cutting-edge laboratories covering topics such as molecular and cellular biology, immunology, virology, microbiology, neuroscience, and systems biology. They benefit from access to state-of-the-art technology platforms, specialized soft skills courses (oral presentation, journal club, ethics, French lessons), a vast seminar program, and mentorship within the Pasteurian community. The competitive selection process includes lab pre-selection, joint applications, and interviews, with around 15 positions available annually. Satellite programs like PPU-EID, PPU-OXFORD, and PPU-MD-PhD provide specialized tracks in emerging infectious diseases, chemistry collaborations, and medical doctor training.

Over three years, students receive a salaried contract from Institut Pasteur (approximately €2,000/month plus benefits), health insurance, housing assistance, visa support, and funding for conferences (€750/year). They defend their thesis per European guidelines, supported by a thesis advisory committee (TAC) and doctoral schools from universities like Université Paris Cité and Sorbonne Université. The program emphasizes intensive research, multidisciplinary coursework (1-2 weeks/year), professional development, and immersion in an interactive environment fostering scientific independence and public health impact.
