The Summer Program for Undergraduate Rising Stars (SPURS) at Columbia University Medical Center is an intensive summer research experience aimed at enhancing diversity in biomedical sciences. The program provides undergraduate students from economically or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds with hands-on research opportunities, mentorship, and professional development to prepare them for advanced degrees in medicine or biomedical research.

SPURS offers a full-time summer research experience where students are assigned a faculty mentor to conduct directed research in an area of mutual interest. The program includes weekly seminars, workshops, and meetings to discuss research projects and explore academic career opportunities. Housing is provided on Columbia’s Morningside Heights campus, and students receive a stipend for living expenses.
