Technical University of Munich Research Internship
The TUM Practical Research Experience Program (TUM PREP) is an 8-week summer research internship offered by the Technical University of Munich (TUM) to excellent students from select partner universities, primarily in North America, the UK, Canada, and Singapore. Participants select from over 80 predefined research projects across TUM's schools and work closely with TUM scientists in small teams, gaining hands-on research experience and insights into German higher education and research. The program runs primarily in Munich and surroundings, with English as the working language. Participants are enrolled as exchange students, receive a TUM student card, and benefit from comprehensive support including accommodation assistance, orientation days, a buddy system, cultural activities, day trips, and up to 10 ECTS credits upon completion. No tuition fees are charged, though participants cover living expenses, insurance, and travel (estimated €3,000-4,000 total for 2 months).
The program emphasizes integration into TUM's research community, with events like a kick-off reception, closing event, and optional extensions up to end of September. It fosters international networks, with participants serving as ambassadors for their home institutions. Selection is competitive, based on academic merit, motivation, and fit with project supervisors.
Eligibility Requirements
- Enrolled at one of TUM PREP's eligible partner universities (specific list including Harvard, MIT, Stanford, UC campuses, etc.), at time of application and participation
- Bachelor or Master students who have completed at least 2 years of undergraduate studies by program start
- Minimum GPA 3.0 (on 4.0 US scale)
- Compliance with project-specific skills/requirements
- Outstanding academic achievements and adaptability
- Participation only once; no PhD students
- Submit complete application by deadline including motivation letters, CV, transcripts, recommendation, etc.
