TRIUMF Summer Research Program Canada
The Richard E. Azuma Undergraduate Summer Fellowship is a prestigious 4-month paid summer research program at TRIUMF, Canada's particle accelerator centre, designed for promising undergraduate students from TRIUMF member universities entering their final year. It supports exceptional students with demonstrated talent, passion, leadership, and diverse backgrounds, particularly equity-deserving groups, who are considering research careers in subatomic physics, nuclear science, quantum technologies, and related fields. Fellows are hired as temporary TRIUMF employees with salary commensurate with experience and receive reimbursement for travel to/from Vancouver and a one-week stay at TRIUMF House. Selected fellows choose from a curated list of cutting-edge 2026 research projects, such as antimatter physics with ALPHA at CERN and TRIUMF, quantum entangled photons decoherence, searches for new particles with DarkLight, nuclear theory, radioactive molecules with RadMol, exotic neutrinos with BeEST, cosmic particle detectors, deep learning for antimatter reconstruction, AI for isotope imaging, quantum simulations for LHC, particle flow reconstruction, and particulate tracking in accelerators. Some projects involve international travel, providing immersive experiences in world-class labs. Future graduate students at member universities receive a $5000 entrance scholarship.
This program immerses participants in TRIUMF's vibrant research environment alongside postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and leading scientists, fostering skills in experimental design, data analysis, programming (C++, Python), hardware, cryogenics, machine learning, and more. It emphasizes equity, diversity, and inclusion, aiming to train the next generation of STEM leaders while contributing to groundbreaking science addressing fundamental questions like antimatter asymmetry, quantum mechanics at MeV scales, beyond-Standard-Model particles, and advanced medical imaging/technologies.
Eligibility Requirements
- Undergraduate students enrolled at a TRIUMF Member University in the summer before their final graduating year (e.g., after 3rd year of 4-year program; for 2026 summer, graduating 2027).
- Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident, or foreign students holding both a Canadian Study Permit and Work Permit.
- Recommended by a departmental administrative professor (e.g., Chair or Undergraduate Chair).
- Open to students from diverse backgrounds, especially equity-deserving groups, in line with TRIUMF's EDI commitment.
