The L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Young Talents programme for Sub-Saharan Africa recognises and funds outstanding women scientists at doctoral and postdoctoral level across the region, aiming to close the gender gap in African science. Starting in 2026, the South African National Programme and the Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Programme have merged into a single, unified L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Sub-Saharan Africa Programme covering researchers from all 49 countries in the region, including South Africa.
Eligibility Requirements
- Woman who is a citizen of one of the 49 Sub-Saharan African countries (including South Africa)
- Conducting research at a laboratory or institution within the region
- Research field in Formal, Life, Environmental, Physical, Engineering, or Technological Sciences
- Doctoral candidates must be in their second year of PhD or higher (first-year students not eligible)
- Postdoctoral researchers must have started their research before the call opened and defended their thesis after February 2021 (window extended by one year per child)
- Previous L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science national or regional program awardees are not eligible
