Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships
The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships, awarded by the Swiss Confederation and administered by the Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students (FCS/ESKAS) under SERI, promote international exchange and research cooperation with over 180 countries. They target talented early-career researchers and artists for full-time research or study at Swiss public universities, universities of applied sciences, ETH Zurich/EPFL, or ETH Domain institutes (PSI, WSL, Empa, Eawag).
Research scholarships (fellowship, PhD, postdoc) provide monthly stipends of CHF 1,920 (fellowship/art/PhD) or CHF 3,500 (postdoc) for living expenses of one person (not a salary), plus health insurance (non-EU/EFTA), CHF 300 rental deposit, Half-Fare Travelcard, return flight allowance (non-EU/EFTA), and excursions/activities. Durations: 12 months (fellowship/postdoc, non-extendable); PhD up to 36 months (renewable twice on progress); art up to 21 months. Does not cover tuition, conferences, fieldwork. Starts 1 Sep 2026.
Applications open 4 Aug 2025 via online form to Swiss diplomatic representations (country-specific deadlines Sep-Dec); free, beware phishing. Selected by end-May 2026 on candidate profile, project quality, cooperation potential. Supervisor support mandatory for research types.
Eligibility Requirements
- General: From 183 countries; born after 31 Dec 1990; Swiss entry not before 1 Aug 2025 if residing; supervisor letter (w/ CV) for research; no prior long stay; max 3 apps/type.
- Research Fellowship: Master's/equiv. by 31 Jul 2026 (ETH: 30 Jun); detailed research plan w/ timeline.
- PhD Scholarship: Same as fellowship; doctoral school admission if applicable.
- Postdoc: PhD completion 1 Jan 2023–31 Jul 2026 (ETH: 30 Jun); research plan.
- Art Scholarship (limited countries): Bachelor's/equiv. by 31 Jul 2026; no Master's yet; admission to Swiss arts school/conservatory.
