BioXFEL Summer Internship Program

United States · New YorkUndergraduateEntry ID: PR-44353

The BioXFEL Summer Internship Program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to participate in cutting-edge research in the fields of structural biology and XFEL science. The program is designed to introduce students to the use of X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) in studying biological structures at the atomic level. XFELs are powerful tools for capturing detailed images of biomolecules, which can lead to breakthroughs in fields such as drug development, enzyme function, and understanding complex biological systems.

Participants in the BioXFEL Summer Internship Program work on research projects under the mentorship of scientists at leading research institutions associated with BioXFEL. Research topics may include crystallography, spectroscopy, computational modeling, and data analysis related to XFEL experiments. In addition to laboratory work, students may engage in interdisciplinary research that combines biology, chemistry, and physics.

The program also offers workshops, seminars, and networking opportunities to help students develop research skills, learn about career paths in biophysics and structural biology, and prepare for graduate school or professional careers. At the end of the program, students present their research findings at a symposium.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Undergraduate Status: Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate students, typically sophomores, juniors, or rising seniors.
  • Interest in Science and Research: Applicants should have a strong interest in structural biology, biophysics, XFEL science, or related fields.
  • Academic Achievement: A strong academic record in science courses is required, particularly in fields such as biology, physics, chemistry, or computational biology.
  • Application Materials: Applicants are generally required to submit a resume or CV, a personal statement outlining their research interests and career goals, unofficial transcripts, and letters of recommendation.
