The [Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internships (SULI) at [Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a Department of Energy (DOE) program that connects STEM undergraduates and recent graduates (within 2 years of associate's or bachelor's) to cutting-edge, hands-on research. Hosted at ORNL, the DOE's largest multiprogram science and energy lab, interns participate in full-time, in-person research on campus, mentored by leading scientists in fields like materials, energy, computing, biology, and security. Terms are 10 weeks (summer, May-August) or 16 weeks (fall/spring, August-December or January-May), with extension options. Benefits include $650 weekly stipend, $250/week housing, and up to $500 travel support if >50 miles away. The program fosters STEM careers through real-world experience at state-of-the-art facilities.

Sponsored by DOE Office of Science's WDTS with 17 DOE labs including ORNL, SULI emphasizes professional development, networking, and contributions to impactful science. Alumni often secure STEM jobs (96%), collaborate further (48%), or join ORNL staff (16%). Applications via central DOE portal allow lab selection (e.g., ORNL); connect with mentors pre-application for best fit. No ORNL-specific deadlines; follows DOE schedule per [DOE SULI].
