The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) at the University of California, Berkeley, provide undergraduates in the College of Letters and Science (L&S) with funding to undertake seven weeks of concentrated summer research on an original project of their own design. SURF offers students the opportunity to engage in independent research projects during the summer, culminating in a senior thesis or other capstone project. Fellows receive mentorship from UC Berkeley faculty and participate in workshops and small group meetings to enhance their research experience.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be matriculated students at UC Berkeley, currently enrolled in the College of Letters and Science, with junior or senior standing according to their Cal Central profile.
  • A minimum overall GPA of 3.0 at UC Berkeley is required.
  • Applicants must submit a well-written and compelling research proposal for an independent project to be completed during the summer months.
  • Applicants must have the full support of a UC Berkeley faculty member (professor or lecturer) who has committed to mentoring the project over the summer.
  • Fellows must devote themselves to research full-time for a minimum of seven weeks during the summer.
  • Previously accepted SURF L&S Fellows are not eligible to reapply.
  • Applicants are required to either attend an application workshop OR schedule a consultation with a SURF Mentor/OURS Advisor before submitting their application
