AAUW's American Doctoral Fellowship is part of its flagship American Fellowship initiative, established in 1888 as the oldest non-institutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States. The fellowship carries a $25,000 stipend, disbursed in two equal payments at the start and midpoint of the fellowship term, to offset expenses during one year of a doctoral program. It is open to women in all fields of study, though those in STEM fields or researching gender issues are especially encouraged to apply.
