The UK Foundation Programme is the two-year, paid, supervised training that newly qualified doctors complete after medical school before entering specialty (residency) training in the UK. It bridges medical school and full registration/specialty training and is the standard entry point into practising medicine in the NHS. Applications are made through the national Oriel system; for the 2027 intake the application window runs 23 September to 7 October 2026 (12:00 midday BST). International medical graduates can apply via the Eligibility route on Oriel, subject to meeting UKFPO eligibility and GMC registration requirements.
